I love this retro camping guide - just starting with the cover! But what's behind the cover is very helpful too. Written and produced by well known film maker and author, Heywood Gould, a person not exactly known for camping, by the way, this book provides a glimpse of what authentic camping used to look for families and campers in the 60's and 70's. It's remarkably practical and informative as well as sporting an art cover that gives us all those retro campy feels.
Here's a more detailed description of the Complete Book of Camping:
"First published in 1972 there are so many things about this guide that remain valid and useful today. With the resurgence in the popularity of camping and glamping, this would be a great book for your next trip. This even includes some options for those who are really roughing it. This has a lot of fun facts for the casual camper." — Goodreads
A WORLD TO WIN IF YOU KNOW THE RULES
As millions of Americans are discovering, outdoor camping can open up a whole wonderful new world of enjoyment. But though nature can be a friend and comforter, it can turn hostile and even dangerous to those who come to it ignorant and unprepared.
The Complete Book of Camping tells you what you need to know whether you are young or old, whether your budget is limited or lavish, whether you seek vigorous adventure in the wilds or just a pleasurable family outdoor vacation. It describes the best equipment from backpacks to house trailers. It shows where to find the best camping areas. It sets down the necessary preparations for different terrains and weather conditions. It imparts such basic skills as setting up a tent, building a fire, paddling a canoe, dealing with animal life and fellow campers, and much, much more It is the one book you should have if you want camping to be the enriching and life-enhancing experience it can and should be.
I've yet to locate a physical copy (on the hunt now!) but the kindle version can be read for under five bucks. If nothing else, it's cheap entertainment for camp enthused folks on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Check out our Into The Great Outdoors Collection of great products for discovering, you guessed it, The Great Outdoors!
